Aval or Poha is beaten rice which can be used in number of dishes, of all of them upma is the most common. It comes in handy on those Sunday mornings, when you wake up late and want to do something fast. Everyone has their own version, this is how I make, with pepper, jeera, garlic..
Need To Have
- Aval - 2 cups
- Peanuts - a handful
- Onion - 1
- Tomato - 1
- Garlic - 4 cloves
- Black Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Urad Dal - 1 teaspoon
- Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
- Coriander Leaves - to garnish
Method
Powder the pepper and cumin seeds coarsely. Chop the onion, garlic and tomato. Wash the aval for a couple of times, drain and keep with a sprinkle of watert. Heat oil, add the mustard seeds and urad dal and peanuts, slightly roast the peanuts. Now add the garlic and onion and curry leaves, saute till the raw smell of garlic goes, then add the chopped tomato and salt, saute for few more mins, till the tomatoes wilt but do not make it mushy. Add now the powdered pepper and cumin, mix well, garnish with chopped coriander and serve warm. Tastes great with the crunchy peanuts in between and with the nice pepper-jeera flavor.
Note
I used the red poha that is available here, you can use either white or red.
I used the thin poha, if you are using the very thick variety soak it accordingly.
very nice recipe, sounds so yummy..i love to eat poha n this is too good, very inviting..red poha makes it even more healthy rt?
