Beetroot Pooris (Puris)

It's been a longtime wish to make colorful Pooris/Puris, the green ones with spinach and then these pink ones with beets. For those who might ask what are pooris, well they are deep fried puffed up flat breads made using whole wheat or all purpose flour or a mix of both. For making these pink Beetroot Pooris, we add some beet paste to the dough along with some spices. The puris look really attractive and they go very well some potato kurma and they would be perfect for a kids party..

Kerala Style Beetroot Kichadi, Onam Sadya Recipes

This whole week it's going to be all Kerala dishes here, especially ones that are served in the Sadya. Yesterday, I had posted Inji Puli, and today it's the Beetroot Kichadi. The Kerala Kichadi is a curd and coconut based dish and not the Rava Khichadi that we Tamilians make or the Rice and Dal Khichdi that they make in the North. It's more like our Pachadi and we can use other vegetables like okra, cucumber and bitter gourds too. There is also another dish called Pachadi in the Sadya and there's only a small difference between the Kichadi and Pachadi. Again I followed the recipe from a cook book, it's a very easy dish and would be a nice accompaniment to any Indian meal and we loved it at home..

Beetroot Moru Kuzhambu

Moru Kuzhambu/Yogurt Stew is a favorite at home, mixed with rice and along with some paruppu usili, it tastes simply too good. Usually we add okra/vendikkai, ash gourd/pusinikkai, chayote/chow-chow or even vadas to the moru kuzhambu. Since I love the combination of beets with yogurt as in beets thayir pachadi/raitha, I wanted to try it out in Moru Kuzhambu. I have a couple of versions of Moru Kuzhambu in the blog, you can check out the links at the end of this post and I wanted to try out another version. I followed this recipe from here and used beets as the vegetable. The dish turned out really good with the nice pink color from the beets and we loved it with some methi/fenugreek leaves paruppu usili..

Beetroot Quinoa

Quinoa has become a part of our regular diet nowadays, I have started replacing rice with it in many of our dishes. Even if I am not preparing a special dish with it, we mix it (instead of rice) with dal or sambar. I made this simple but yummy combination of quinoa with beetroot, if you like beetroot rice or curry, then you should definitely give this a try..

Beetroot Soup

The cold weather here makes one crave for some kind of soup, either the creamier version or the lighter soups. Personally I like the clear soups, spiced up with lots of pepper, sometimes even the hot rasam is more than welcome. As a kid I used to like beets just for the color, loved the tongue turning pink after eating them, liked to have them with curd rice, just to see the white rice become pink. Usually it's the beetroot poriyal and on occasions the beetroot halwa, especially when my amma made it and gave me hot, hot. Today's soup is the husband's favorite, it's one simple and easy soup with literally very few ingredients..
