Jowar (Cholam) Pidi Kozhukattai (Sweet), Jowar Modaks

Tomorrow is Vinayagar Chathurthi, and here is another healthy Kozhukattai recipe that you can try out, Jowar/Cholam/Sorghum Pidi Kozhukattai. This is such an easy dish, so if you don't have time to make the Stuffed Kozhukattais/Modaks, you can make these simple ones and they would also make for an healthy evening snack for kids. I made it just like the regular rice flour ones and they tasted very good both warm and cold..

Need To Have

  • Jowar/Cholam/Sorghum Flour - 1/2 cup
  • Grated Jaggery - 1/4 cup
  • Cardamom - 1
  • Grated Coconut - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - a very small pinch
  • Oil for greasing while shaping the Kozhukattais

Method

Take a cup of water and add the jaggery and heat till it melts and strain it for impurities. Put the jaggery water in the same pan, and add the coconut, salt and cardamom ( powder the inner pods ) and heat it.

Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat and add the jowar flour while mixing it at the same time, so that there will not be any lumps. Keep mixing it on low heat, till it comes together into a thick mass and you can roll out a small ball with the dough.

At this stage, remove it and cool it a little so that it's not too hot to shape into kozhukattais. Grease your hands with oil and mix the dough. Now take a small lemon sized ball of the dough, make a oval shape with it and hold it ( 'pidi' means 'to hold' in Tamil ) in your palm and press it, so you get the finger marks on it.

Do it with the rest of the dough. Arrange in a steamer or greased idli molds and steam it for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove and serve them warm or cold.

Note
Pidi Kozhukattais are always mildly sweet but if you want it very sweet then you can add another tablespoon of jaggery.
Keep whisking continously while adding the flour, otherwise there might be some lumps and do on low heat, so that the flour also gets cooked in the process.
Please note that I have said jaggery water and not jaggery syrup, the water is required for the flour to get cooked.
You can add small pieces of coconut instead of grated one.
