Next in line on Onam Sadya Dishes is Cabbage Thoran. Thoran is stir fry with vegetables and can be made with cabbage, carrot, beans or greens and is close in taste to the poriyal in the Tamil Cuisine. The main difference is the cooking oil, which is coconut oil and the amount of coconut that is added at the end. It's a very easy dish, and a perfect side to any South Indian meal..
Need To Have
- Shredded Cabbage - 2 cups
- Green Chilly - 1 slit
- Small Onions/Shallots - 2, chopped
- Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Curry Leaves - 10
- Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup, packed
- Salt to taste
Method
Heat a teaspoon or more of coconut oil, add the mustard seeds, once it starts sputtering, add the green chilly, chopped onions and curry leaves and saute till the onions turn transparent. Then add the chopped cabbage and salt and cover and cook on medium-low heat till the vegetable is done. Once the cabbage is cooked and dry, add the grated coconut, mix and remove.
Note
You can use any of the vegetables mentioned above or a combination of vegetables.
Once the vegetable is cooked and if there is any moisture, then increase the heat and cook till it becomes dry and then add the coconut.
You can use other cooking oil, but coconut oil gives that unique flavor.
Usually the amount of coconut added is even more, so if you like, you can add even 1/2 cup of coconut.
looks good, need to add more coconut usually for this amount of cabbage about 1/2 of coconut. As you know we Kerala people love to add coconut a lot.
ReplyDeleteI know Swathi, I was cooking a lot of dishes that day with coconut, so I reduced it. but after seeing your comment, I have added a line in my note section..
