Bread Halwa Recipe


          The first and perhaps the only time that I had tasted Bread Halwa is some 20 years back. My knowledge about cooking was negative back then, but I can still remember the rich taste and texture of it. After that, I had wanted to try it so many times and finally got to make it only now. I am not exaggerating, when I say that it's one of the easiest sweets you can make, and you just need some bread and the other basic ingredients in a sweet. Try it out the next time you have some extra slices of bread and you have the sudden craving for something sweet..

Need To Have

  • Bread Slices - 4
  • Milk - 3/4 cup
  • Sugar - 1/4 cup
  • Ghee - 3 - 4 tablespoons
  • Cashews - 3, broken to pieces
  • Golden Raisins - 5
  • Green Cardamom - 2

Method


          Tear the bread into small pieces and keep. Heat 4 teaspoons of ghee, add the cashews and raisins till golden, remove and keep.


          Add another 2 teaspoons of ghee, add the bread pieces, toast the pieces 3 to 4 minutes on medium heat.


          Then then add 1/2 cup milk, mix and add the sugar.


          Mix, if the mixture is very dry, add the remaining 1/4 cup milk, reduce the heat, mix and mash the bread well, cover and cook for 2 minutes. Remove the lid, add the remaining ghee, keep mixing till it comes together and is no longer sticky. Add the cardamom ( powder the inner pods and add ), roasted cashews and raisins, mix and remove and serve it warm.


Note
The bread pieces that I had were a little dry, if the bread is moist, then you might not need the 1/4 cup of milk.
The halwa was sweet enough for us, but if you like it very sweet, then you can add another tablespoon of sugar.
I have used 3 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons of ghee, but you want it to be more rich, then you can add another tablespoon of ghee too, but don't reduce the ghee to less than 3 tablespoons.
The halwa tastes best when served warm, it's very soft, you can refrigerate leftovers, warm it before serving.
